Wet Room Bathrooms — Curbless, Waterproof, and Beautifully Simple
A wet room combines the shower, tub, and often the vanity into a single waterproofed space. Done properly, it's the cleanest look in a modern bathroom — done improperly, it's a leak.
Wet rooms are having a moment in DFW — freestanding tub sitting next to a curbless walk-in shower, glass panel instead of a full enclosure, one continuous floor from door to tub. The look is minimal. The waterproofing underneath is anything but.
The whole floor is a shower pan. The walls in the wet zone are all waterproofed. The slope has to actually work. The drain has to be sized and located correctly. And the transitions — into the toilet room, at the vanity, at the doorway — have to be detailed so water doesn't wander.
Where wet rooms fit
- Primary suites where the tub-and-shower combo is being replaced entirely, and there's room to open the layout.
- Aging-in-place remodels — curbless entry, benches, grab bars integrated into the design, no thresholds to trip over.
- Small bathrooms where a traditional enclosed shower eats too much of the room; a wet-room approach opens the space visually.
What has to be right underneath
- Full-floor waterproofing. A bonded sheet or liquid membrane across the entire wet zone, tied into the walls.
- Real slope. Not just at the drain — the whole floor pitches. On a slab home this usually means a mud bed set correctly.
- Drain placement and sizing. Linear drain or center drain, sized to the shower flow rate, located so the slope stays walkable.
- Ventilation. A wet room stays wetter longer than a traditional bathroom. Exhaust sized and vented to the outside.
- Radiant floor heat. Not required, but the floor is stone and it's the whole room — you'll want it in January.
What it doesn't fix
Wet rooms aren't a fix for a bathroom that's too small overall. If the vanity is jammed against the toilet and the closet is inside the room, removing the shower curb doesn't rescue the layout. Layout comes first, wet-room detailing comes second.
